DUE TO LACK OF RESPONSE THERE WILL BE NO 2011 CITIZENS ACADEMY.  We hope to evaluate it again in the future.

Ever want to know how your local government works?  The City is offering an inside look through a 7-week session on what we do and how we do it.  This academy is an exciting way to learn about how our city is governed and to involve residents in community issues.  Previous participants have described their experience with the Citizens’ Academy as “Overall an A+,” “Makes me want to be more involved in the community,” “…bound to be the hottest ticket in town.”

Participants will visit various departments and facilities and experience local decision-making processes to help create a better understanding and a stronger partnership with the City.

Examples of what participants will experience:

o       Tours and discussion of Public Works, Water & Wastewater Treatment

o       Tours and discussion of Police and Fire

o       Quality of life issues – recreation, walkable communities

o       Community Development-Planning, Zoning, Building, Code Enforcement

o       Overview of local government

o       The budget process – revenues and expenses, Assessing Process

o       Voting process

o       Downtown Dev/Main St.

o       Information Technology and Communication

If you would like to learn more about the City of Howell Citizens’ Academy, please contact the City Manager’s office (517) 546-3861 or sboak@ci.howell.mi.us.  Priority for enrollment will be given to City residents first, and you must be 18 years of age or older to participate.
