Another exciting session of the Citizens’ Academy is in the works. The eight-week program is an excitingl way to learn about how our city is governed and to involve residents in community issues. Previous participants have described their experience with the Citizens’ Academy as “Overall an A+,” “Makes me want to be more involved in the community,” “…bound to be the hottest ticket in town.”
Participants will visit various departments and facilities and experience local decision-making processes to help create a better understanding and a stronger partnership with the City.
Examples of what participants will experience:
o Tours and discussion of Public Works, Water & Wastewater Treatment
o Tours and discussion of Police and Fire
o Quality of life issues – recreation, walkable communities
o Zoning, Planning, Building, Code enforcement, DDA & Community Development
o Overview of local government
o The budget process – revenues and expenses
o Voting process
o Assessing process
o Information Technology and communication
The program is scheduled to start March 27, 2008 on Thursday evenings, for eight weeks, from 6: 30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.
