Michigan's New Smoke-Free Law
April 29th, 2010 at 11:47 am

Michigan’s new smoke-free law prohibits smoking in most public places. As of May 1, 2010, all worksites in Michigan (including bars and restaurants) must be smoke free. Under the new law, smoking is not allowed on patios and decks where service is intended and is also prohibited in enclosed areas of hotels, motels, and inns (including rooms).

Beginning May 1, 2010, a person in charge of an establishment that is subject to the new smoke free law must:

  • Post required no smoking signs (even if the establishment is already smoke free).
  • Remove indoor ashtrays and other smoking receptacles.
  • Direct any person who is smoking to extinguish the cigarette, cigar or other lighted tobacco item.

For your convenience, Howell City Hall has a supply of “Smoke Free Signs” available at their offices, 611 E. Grand River (2nd Floor).

The Livingston County Department of Public Health has been very proactive in preparing residents and businesses for the May 1st deadline, and expect that compliance among business owners in Livingston County will be quite high. Questions on requirements, implementation and enforcement of Michigan’s Smoke Free Law should be referred to the Livingston County Department of Public Health at 517-546-9850. Please follow the link below to learn more about Michigan’s Smoke Free Law.
